Kmart is a leading retail department store brand that operates extensively across Australia and New Zealand. While the Kmart name originated in the United States, the Australian and New Zealand operations diverged from the American entity decades ago and are now entirely separate in terms of ownership and supply chain management.
Kmart Australia and New Zealand focus on high-volume, low-price offerings, primarily through their in-house labels like Anko. The products sold in these stores are sourced from a vast global network of manufacturers, with a significant amount of production occurring in China, Bangladesh, India, Cambodia, and Vietnam to maintain their discount pricing model.
Today, Kmart in New Zealand is owned by Wesfarmers Limited, an Australian conglomerate. Wesfarmers has successfully transformed the brand into one of the most profitable retail assets in the region, operating it alongside other major brands like Target Australia and Bunnings Warehouse. Despite the shared name, there is no corporate connection between the Kmart found in New Zealand and the Kmart brand currently owned by Transformco in the United States.
