7-Eleven is the world's largest convenience store chain, originally founded in 1927 in Dallas, Texas. Initially called 'Tote'm Stores,' it was renamed 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect its then-unprecedented operating hours of 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The brand revolutionized the retail industry by introducing the first to-go coffee cups and the invention of the iconic Slurpee.

While the brand originated in the United States, its ownership shifted significantly over the decades. Following a financial restructuring in the late 1980s, the Japanese affiliate, Ito-Yokado, acquired a controlling interest. By 2005, Seven-Eleven Japan became the sole owner, eventually forming the holding company Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd., which is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Today, 7-Eleven operates as a global franchise with tens of thousands of locations. Manufacturing for its private-label goods (such as 7-Select) occurs in multiple countries, typically localized to the region where the store is located to ensure freshness and reduce logistics costs. The brand remains a cornerstone of urban convenience, particularly in East Asia and North America.
