Dole began its journey as the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, founded by James Dole in 1901. Over the decades, it grew into one of the world's most recognizable processed fruit and vegetable brands. Today, the manufacturing of canned pineapple occurs primarily in major tropical agricultural hubs, with substantial operations based in the Philippines and Thailand, where large-scale plantations and canneries are located to process the fruit immediately after harvest for maximum freshness.
The brand's ownership structure has evolved significantly in recent years. While it was once a single global entity, the Dole brand is now split between two major corporations. Dole Food Company (focused on fresh produce) merged into Total Produce to form Dole plc, based in Ireland. However, the packaged goods division—which includes canned pineapples and fruit snacks—is owned and operated by Dole Packaged Foods, a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Itochu Corporation. This strategic split allows the brand to leverage specialized supply chains for both fresh and shelf-stable products worldwide.
