Zig-Zag is one of the world's most iconic brands of rolling papers, easily recognized by the 'Zouave' soldier logo on its packaging. The brand was founded in 1879 by Maurice and Jacques Braunstein in Paris, France. They famously patented the process of interleaving papers in a 'zig-zag' fashion so that pulling one paper out automatically pulls the next one forward, a system that revolutionized the market and remains the industry standard today.
The majority of Zig-Zag rolling papers are manufactured in France, specifically at the historic Bolloré factory in Perpignan. This facility is renowned for producing high-quality, lightweight papers using sustainable fibers and natural Arabic gum. While production is concentrated in France, the distribution and specific ownership of the brand vary significantly by global region.
The ownership of Zig-Zag is split between different entities depending on the geography. In the United States and Canada, the brand and distribution rights are held by Turning Point Brands, Inc. However, the global rights to the brand and its manufacturing remain with Republic Technologies International, which is headquartered in France. Republic Technologies is a major global player in the tobacco accessories market and continues to uphold the heritage of the Braunstein brothers' original invention.
