Pearle Opticians is a leading optical retailer with a rich history dating back to 1937 when it was founded by Stanley Pearle in Savannah, Georgia, USA. Originally known as Pearle Vision, the brand expanded significantly across North America before crossing the Atlantic and establishing a massive presence in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and Belgium where it became a household name for prescription glasses, contact lenses, and eye exams.
Over several decades, the ownership of Pearle's European operations shifted through various corporate hands. Today, Pearle is a core brand of the EssilorLuxottica group. This global powerhouse was formed through the 2018 merger of the French lens manufacturer Essilor and the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica. In 2021, EssilorLuxottica completed the acquisition of GrandVision (the long-time parent company of Pearle in Europe), making Pearle part of the world's largest eyewear company.
While eye exams and fittings take place locally in hundreds of Pearle retail locations, the physical production of frames and lenses is distributed globally. Most frames are manufactured in high-tech facilities in Italy or China, while specialized lens manufacturing occurs at optics labs throughout Europe and Asia to meet local consumer demand.
