It was originally developed by the Chemische Fabrik Miltitz to provide an East German alternative to Western cola products like Coca-Cola. The beverage is famous for its unique flavor profile, which includes a distinct touch of lemon and herbal notes, typically making it less sweet and more citrusy than global competitors.

Following the German reunification, many East German brands struggled to survive, but Vita Cola experienced a major resurgence due to 'Ostalgie' (nostalgia for East German products). In 1994, the rights to the brand and its secret recipe were acquired by Thüringer Waldquell Mineralbrunnen GmbH. Today, it remains highly successful, particularly in Thuringia, where it often outsells international brands. The product is manufactured at various sites within Germany, primarily in Thuringia, to serve its growing domestic market.
