Voltaren Gel

Voltaren is a widely recognized brand for the treatment of pain and inflammation, most famous for its topical diclofenac sodium gel used to treat osteoarthritis and joint pain. The brand's history is deeply rooted in the Swiss pharmaceutical industry, specifically originating with Geigy (which later became part of Ciba-Geigy and eventually Novartis).

Manufacturing of Voltaren products is a global operation. Historically, much of the production was concentrated in Swiss facilities, but to meet global demand, it is now manufactured in multiple pharmaceutical sites across Europe and North America. In recent years, ownership of the over-the-counter (OTC) version of the brand transitioned through a joint venture between GSK and Novartis.

As of 2022, the consumer healthcare division was spun off into a new independent entity called Haleon. This strategic move means that while Novartis remains a major player in prescription pharmaceuticals, the consumer-facing Voltaren brand is now managed and owned by Haleon, headquartered in the United Kingdom. This transition represents one of the largest restructurings in the histories of the consumer healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
