Morrisons is a unique figure in the British retail landscape, distinguished by its extensive vertical integration. Founded in 1899 by William Morrison as a humble egg and butter stall in Bradford, it has grown into one of the UK's largest supermarket chains. Unlike many competitors, Morrisons acts as both a retailer and a major food manufacturer, producing approximately 25% of its own-brand fresh food through its dedicated manufacturing arm, recently rebranded as Myton Food Group.

This 'farm to fork' model involves direct relationships with over 1,500 British farmers and the operation of 19 manufacturing sites across the UK, including bakeries, meat processing plants (such as Farmers Boy), and fruit and vegetable packing facilities. While fresh produce is heavily sourced and manufactured within the UK to ensure quality and provenance, non-food items and certain ambient goods are sourced globally from countries including China, India, and various European nations.

In 2021, the company transitioned from being a public entity to private ownership following a high-profile acquisition by the American private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R). Despite this change in ownership, Morrisons remains headquartered in Bradford and continues to emphasize its British heritage and commitment to local sourcing.
