Marabou is one of Scandinavia's most beloved chocolate brands, originally founded in Sweden in 1916. The brand was established by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, who already owned the Freia brand in Norway. Because the name Freia was already registered in Sweden, he chose the name Marabou, inspired by the stork on the Freia logo.

Today, Marabou is owned by the American multinational confectionery and snack food giant Mondelez International. While it is a global brand under a US-based parent company, production for the Nordic market remains centered in Sweden, specifically at the factory in Upplands Väsby outside Stockholm.
