Created in 1962 by Brian Sollitt at Rowntree's in the United Kingdom, the product was designed as an 'after-dinner' luxury mint, aligning with the refined dining culture of the era.

Originally produced at the Rowntree factory in York, manufacturing has shifted over the decades. Today, the majority of After Eight production for European and international markets takes place in the Nestlé factory in Hamburg, Germany. The brand has transitioned from a British local favorite to a global staple, maintaining its image as a sophisticated treat.

In 1988, the Swiss multinational Nestlé S.A. acquired Rowntree Mackintosh, bringing the brand under its extensive global portfolio. Under Nestlé's ownership, the product line has expanded to include limited edition flavors and various formats, though the original dark chocolate mint remains the flagship product.
