Suunto is a globally recognized Finnish brand known for its precision sports watches, dive computers, and compasses. Founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen after he invented a mass-production method for liquid-filled compasses, the company has since become a standard for professional athletes and outdoor explorers. The brand is deeply rooted in Finnish engineering and continues to manufacture many of its high-end flagship products at its factory in Vantaa, Finland.
Over the decades, Suunto transitioned from being a family-owned business to part of larger corporate portfolios. In 1999, it became part of Amer Sports, a powerhouse in the sporting goods industry. However, in recent years, the ownership landscape has shifted. In 2019, Amer Sports (including Suunto) was acquired by a consortium led by the Chinese sportswear giant Anta Sports. Following a strategic decision to focus on its largest brands, Amer Sports sold Suunto to Liesheng, an electronics company, in 2022. This acquisition marked a new era for Suunto, blending its Finnish heritage with the technological resources of a specialized wearable electronics leader. Today, Suunto remains headquartered in Finland, maintaining its brand identity and commitment to adventure technology under its current global ownership.
