The brand was inspired by a trip to the Yukon and named after author Jack London and the protective nature of wolf fur. While its engineering and design remain rooted in its headquarters in Idstein, Germany, its manufacturing is a global operation. Production predominantly occurs in Asian countries like China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Cambodia to balance cost and technical expertise, though some specialized components and products are sourced from European nations including Germany and Italy.

After several changes in ownership involving private equity firms like Blackstone and the retail giant Topgolf Callaway Brands, the company entered a new chapter in early 2025. It was acquired by Anta Sports, a leading Chinese sportswear group that also holds major stakes in brands such as Arc'teryx and Salomon through its subsidiary Amer Sports. This acquisition is part of Anta's global expansion strategy, aiming to leverage Jack Wolfskin's established European presence and technical engineering to grow its outdoor sports segment internationally.
