Odhner mechanical calculator

The Odhner calculator, often referred to as 'Original-Odhner', is one of the most significant inventions in the history of mechanical computing. Invented in 1874 by Willgodt T. Odhner, a Swedish engineer living in St. Petersburg, Russia, the device utilizes a pin-wheel mechanism to perform arithmetic operations. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the family returned to Sweden and established production in Gothenburg under the name Aktiebolaget Original-Odhner.

Throughout the mid-20th century, these robust machines were an office staple worldwide. In 1942, the company was acquired by Atvidabergs Industrier, which later became the office equipment giant Facit. During the 1960s, Facit/Odhner dominated the global market for mechanical calculators until the rapid rise of electronic calculators led to the demise of the mechanical calculator industry. Today, the Odhner brand name survives as a part of industrial history, with the intellectual property and heritage residing under the lineage of the former Facit Group, which saw various restructurings before its eventual dissolution as a hardware manufacturer.
