Sarah-Jane Cooper developed the recipe in her kitchen at 83 High Street, Oxford, and it quickly became a local staple. The brand gained significant prestige throughout the 20th century, notably receiving a Royal Warrant and becoming a favorite of famous figures like Scott of the Antarctic and James Bond (in Ian Fleming's novels).

Manufacturing was traditionally based in Oxford before moving to Witney and later outside the county. Today, the product is primarily manufactured in the United Kingdom under the stewardship of the current brand owners. While production techniques have modernized, the brand maintains its 'Oxford' branding to reflect its historical roots and the distinct dark, robust flavor profile that characterize the original recipe.
