Brand History and Origins

Vauxhall is one of the oldest established automotive names in the United Kingdom, founded in 1857 by Alexander Wilson as a marine engine manufacturer in Vauxhall, London. The company transitioned to car manufacturing in 1903. For decades, it was a staple of British motoring, known for its iconic factory in Luton and its heavy involvement in both civilian and military vehicle production.

Ownership Evolution

For much of its history (from 1925 to 2017), Vauxhall was a subsidiary of General Motors (GM). During this period, Vauxhall products became synonymous with the German brand Opel, with both brands sharing designs and engineering. In 2017, the French Groupe PSA acquired Vauxhall and Opel. Following the 2021 merger between Groupe PSA and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Vauxhall became a brand under the conglomerate Stellantis.

Manufacturing and Global Presence

While Vauxhall remains a British-exclusive brand (with its sibling Opel serving European markets), its manufacturing is globalized. Major production facilities include the Ellesmere Port plant in the UK, but many models are also manufactured in Stellantis facilities across Germany, Poland, France, and Spain. Today, the brand is focused on transitioning to a fully electric lineup as part of the broader Stellantis strategic roadmap.
