El Pais is Spain's most-read daily newspaper, originally founded in 1976 during the Spanish transition to democracy. It was established by Jose Ortega Spottorno and quickly became the leading publication for progressive and liberal viewpoints in the country.

Today, the publication is owned and operated by PRISA (Promotora de Informaciones, S.A.), a major Spanish media conglomerate. While the newspaper is centrally headquartered in Madrid and printed primarily in Spain for domestic circulation, it maintains a massive global presence with various international editions, particularly throughout Latin America.

PRISA remains the ultimate owner and is one of the most significant media groups in the Spanish-speaking world, holding interests in education, radio, and television alongside its flagship print and digital news operations.
