Founded in 1894 by John Barbour in South Shields, North East England, Barbour is an iconic British heritage brand synonymous with waxed cotton jackets. Historically, the brand rose to fame by providing waterproof outerwear for sailors, fishermen, and dockers, eventually becoming a staple of British country life and a recipient of multiple Royal Warrants.

While Barbour has expanded its production globally to include items like knitwear and accessories manufactured in Europe and Asia, its core classic waxed jackets continue to be handcrafted in its factory in South Shields. This local manufacturing commitment remains a cornerstone of the brand's identity.

Unlike many heritage labels that have been acquired by large luxury conglomerates, Barbour remains a family-owned business. It is currently under the ownership of the fifth generation of the Barbour family, specifically led by Dame Margaret Barbour and her daughter Helen Barbour, ensuring the company maintains its traditional values and independent status into 2026 and beyond.
