Herta Knacki Veggie is a popular vegetarian sausage variety produced by Herta, a brand with deep European roots. Originally founded in Germany in 1897 as a family-run butcher shop, it became a major player in the charcuterie market before expanding into plant-based alternatives to cater to changing dietary preferences.
Today, the brand operates as a joint venture. In 2019, Nestlé sold a 60% majority stake in Herta to Casa Tarradellas, a Spanish family-owned food company, while Nestlé retained 40%. This partnership manages the brand across various European markets, including France and Belgium, where these specific Knacki Veggie sausages are widely distributed. The production for the French market primarily takes place in France, specifically at the Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise site, which is one of Europe's largest charcuterie production facilities.
