Lycra

Lycra is a world-renowned brand of synthetic elastic fiber, scientifically known as elastane (or spandex in North America). The fiber was originally invented in 1958 by a team of scientists at the DuPont laboratory in Waynesboro, Virginia. It revolutionized the fashion industry by providing exceptional stretch and recovery properties to garments, becoming a staple in sportswear, swimwear, and intimate apparel.

Historically, the brand was part of DuPont's textile division before being sold to various private equity firms and textile conglomerates. Today, the brand is managed by The Lycra Company, which operates manufacturing facilities and research labs across the globe, including locations in the United States, Brazil, Northern Ireland, the Netherlands, and Singapore to serve international textile markets.

In terms of corporate ownership, the brand passed from DuPont to Koch Industries (under the Invista name) and was later acquired by Shandong Ruyi Technology Group. Following a financial restructuring, control of The Lycra Company was transferred to a group of international investment firms, ensuring its continued status as a global leader in advanced fiber and technology solutions for the apparel and personal care industries.
