Spee is a historic German laundry detergent brand with a distinctive heritage. Originally launched in 1968 in Genthin, East Germany (GDR) by the state-owned enterprise Waschmittelwerk Genthin, it stood for 'Spezial-Entwicklung' (Special Development). It became the leading laundry brand in East Germany due to its effectiveness and availability.
Following the reunification of Germany, the brand was acquired in 1990 by Henkel, a major German multinational. Under Henkel's management, Spee was repositioned as a smart, value-for-money brand, famously represented by the 'Spee Fox' mascot (Der Spee-Fuchs). Today, the product is primarily manufactured in Henkel's European production facilities, with significant output still coming from Germany to serve the DACH region.
