Flensburger Gold is a mild, bottom-fermented lager produced by the Flensburger Brauerei Emil Petersen GmbH & Co. KG. The brewery is located in Flensburg, in the northernmost part of Germany (Schleswig-Holstein).
Founded in 1888 by five citizens of Flensburg, the brewery has remained one of the few large independent family-owned breweries in Germany. It is iconic for its traditional 'Plopp' sound, which comes from the use of swing-top (flip-top) bottles. Unlike many other major German beer brands that have been acquired by large international conglomerates, Flensburger maintains its independence, with the Dethleffsen family and Emil Petersen legacy still playing a central role in its governance. All production takes place at their historic site in Flensburg using water from their own deep well.
