The brand was founded in San Francisco in 1966 by Douglas and Susie Tompkins as a small mountaineering retail store named after the coldest and most challenging side of a mountain. In 2000, the brand was acquired by VF Corporation. While originally rooted in California, manufacturing for the Base Camp Duffel now primarily takes place in various Asian countries, including Vietnam and Indonesia, to meet global demand.
