Affligem is a historic Belgian abbey beer brand that traces its lineage back to the Affligem Abbey, which was founded in 1074. The monks of this abbey began brewing beer as a way to sustain the community and offer hospitality to pilgrims. For centuries, the brewing tradition was maintained within the abbey's walls, developing iconic styles such as Blond, Dubbel, and Tripel.

Today, while the beer is inspired by the original abbey recipes and the abbey remains the religious home of the brand, the actual production has been modernized. Since the late 20th century, the brewing operations have been moved to commercial facilities to meet global demand, specifically the Alken-Maes brewery in Opwijk, Belgium. The brand is now a flagship premium beer within the international portfolio of Heineken N.V.

Ownership of Affligem is firmly under Heineken N.V., a Dutch multinational brewing giant. Through this ownership, Affligem has been distributed globally, reaching markets far beyond its Belgian origins while maintaining its status as a recognized 'Abbey Beer' under license from the monks of Affligem.
