Pradaxa is a prescription medication used to prevent blood clots and strokes. It was developed by the German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim. The active ingredient, dabigatran etexilate, is a direct thrombin inhibitor.
The brand is owned and manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies and one of the few large ones that remains privately held. While major manufacturing and research hubs are located in Germany (notably Biberach an der Riß and Ingelheim am Rhein), the company operates global facilities to distribute the medicine worldwide.
