Freia Chocolate

Freia is one of Norway's most iconic brands, deeply embedded in the national identity with its slogan "Et lite stykke Norge" (A little piece of Norway). Founded in 1889 by Olaf Larsen and Fredrik Wilhelm Hjorth Christensen in Oslo, the brand underwent significant expansion after being acquired by Johan Throne Holst in 1892. It is famous for legendary products like Freia Melkesjokolade (milk chocolate) and the hiking staple Kvikk Lunsj.

While the brand maintains its headquarters and primary manufacturing facility in the Rodeløkka district of Oslo, its ownership has transitioned from a local family business to part of a global conglomerate. In 1993, the company was acquired by Kraft General Foods (later Kraft Foods). Following a corporate split in 2012, Freia became part of Mondelēz International. Despite being globally owned, much of the production remains in Norway using Norwegian milk, though some specific production processes have been outsourced to other European countries such as Sweden, Lithuania, and Estonia to align with global supply chain strategies.
