GORE-TEX fabric technology

GORE-TEX is a world-renowned waterproof and breathable fabric membrane invented in 1969 by Bill Gore and his son Robert W. Gore. The technology is based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTPE), which was stretched to create a strong, porous material known as expanded PTFE (ePTFE). This innovation revolutionized the outdoor industry by allowing moisture vapor to escape while preventing liquid water from entering.

Manufacturing for GORE-TEX membranes occurs in several countries, with major production facilities located in the United States, Germany, Japan, and China. The technology is not sold as a standalone product to consumers but is licensed as a functional component to hundreds of global brands in the outdoor, medical, and aerospace industries.

W. L. Gore & Associates remains a privately held company, maintaining its independence and commitment to material science. Unlike many historic brands that have been acquired by large conglomerates, Gore continues to be owned by the Gore family and its associates through an employee-owned corporate structure based in Delaware.
