Divine Chocolate is a pioneer in the ethical confectionery industry, renowned for being one of the world's first farmer-owned Fairtrade chocolate brands. The brand's journey began in 1993 with the formation of the Kuapa Kokoo farmers' cooperative in Ghana, which aimed to empower small-scale cocoa farmers and ensure they received a fair share of the wealth they created. In 1998, with the support of organizations like Twin Trading, The Body Shop, and Christian Aid, the cooperative launched its own chocolate company in the United Kingdom under the name 'The Day Chocolate Company' (later renamed Divine Chocolate Ltd). This revolutionary business model placed farmers not just as suppliers, but as shareholders with a voice in the company's governance and a direct stake in its profits.
While the cocoa is grown and sourced directly from the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative in Ghana, the manufacturing of the finished chocolate bars has historically been centered in Germany. Since the brand's inception in 1998, the German family-owned manufacturer Ludwig Weinrich GmbH & Co. KG has been the primary producer of Divine's chocolate. This partnership deepened in June 2020 when Ludwig Weinrich acquired a majority stake in Divine Chocolate Ltd, providing the capital needed for global expansion while maintaining the brand's core mission. As of 2026, the company continues to operate with this dual-ownership structure where the German manufacturer holds the majority interest and the Ghanaian farmers' cooperative retains a significant minority share (approximately 20%) and board representation, ensuring that the brand remains rooted in its social purpose and Ghanaian heritage.
