Gouda Cheese (Dutch Origin Style)

Gouda is one of the world's most famous cheeses, originally named after the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. While the name 'Gouda' refers to a specific style of cheesemaking and is not a protected trademark globally, 'Gouda Holland' is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) which ensures the cheese is made in the Netherlands using Dutch milk.

Because the word 'Gouda' itself is often used as a generic term for the style, the product can be manufactured in many countries including Germany, the United States, and Poland. However, premium and traditional versions remain deeply rooted in Dutch agricultural heritage. Ownership of various Gouda brands varies significantly, ranging from large multinational dairy cooperatives like FrieslandCampina to smaller artisanal producers throughout the Dutch countryside.
