Becel is a well-known brand of margarine and plant-based spreads with a legacy rooted in heart health. Originally developed by Unilever in the 1960s in the Netherlands, the brand's name is derived from the acronym BCL (Blood Cholesterol Lowering). It was designed specifically to offer a product high in polyunsaturated fatty acids to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads business to KKR, a private equity firm, which subsequently formed Upfield. Today, Becel is owned and managed by Upfield, which has transitioned the brand toward entirely plant-based and palm oil-free formulations, as seen in this 'Light' variety. Manufacturing occurs in multiple facilities across Europe, primarily serving the Benelux and DACH regions, ensuring the product reaches consumers fresh and sustainably.
