Alko alcohol retailer

Alko is the independent, state-owned retail monopoly for alcoholic beverages in Finland. It is the only store in the country allowed to sell beer with more than 8.0% ABV, wine, and spirits, with a few exceptions for small breweries and farm-based producers. The company serves a public health function by regulating the sale of alcohol through a controlled retail network.

While Alko itself is a retailer and does not manufacture the products, it sources its vast inventory from thousands of international and domestic suppliers. The brand is deeply integrated into Finnish society as part of the Nordic alcohol monopoly model, aimed at minimizing alcohol-related harm through retail restrictions and price controlling.

Owned entirely by the Finnish State, Alko operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. This ensures that profit is not the primary motivator, but rather social responsibility and public safety across its hundreds of locations nationwide.
