M&M's were first introduced in 1941 in the United States by Forrest Mars Sr. and Bruce Murrie, the son of Hershey’s president, which is where the name 'M&M' originates (Mars & Murrie). The button-shaped chocolates were originally inspired by a method used during the Spanish Civil War to allow soldiers to carry chocolate without it melting.

The brand is a flagship property of Mars, Incorporated, a family-owned multinational corporation. While famously associated with the US, M&M's are manufactured globally in facilities across North America, Europe (including France and Poland for the EU market), and Asia to meet regional demand. The Crispy variety, featured in the blue packaging, remains one of the brand's most popular permanent variations worldwide.
