The Body Shop was founded in 1976 by Anita Roddick in Brighton, United Kingdom. From its inception, the brand revolutionized the beauty industry by focusing on ethical consumerism, cruelty-free testing, and natural ingredients. It became one of the first cosmetics companies to prohibit testing on animals and pioneered the Fair Trade movement within the beauty sector through its Community Fair Trade program.
While rooted in British heritage, The Body Shop's manufacturing processes are distributed across multiple countries to serve its global footprint. Key production facilities have historically been located in the United Kingdom and Europe, but the brand also sources raw materials from over 20 countries, supporting local producers and sustainable farming practices worldwide. The formulations are designed to meet high standards of environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
The ownership of The Body Shop has changed hands several times over the decades. After being owned by L'Oréal and subsequently the Brazilian group Natura & Co, the brand was acquired by the private equity firm Aurelius Group in late 2023. As of 2024 and beyond, the brand is navigating a restructuring phase under Aurelius’s management with the goal of returning to its heritage roots and stabilizing its international operations. The ultimate ownership resides with the Aurelius Group, headquartered in Germany.
