Senseo is a globally recognized coffee brewing system and pod brand that originated in the Netherlands. It was born out of a strategic collaboration between the Dutch electronics giant Philips and the iconic Dutch coffee roaster Douwe Egberts. Launched in 2001, the brand revolutionized the home coffee market by introducing the concept of single-serve coffee pads that created a signature 'crema' layer without the high price of traditional espresso machines.
The partnership combined Philips' expertise in home appliance engineering with Douwe Egberts' centuries-old mastery of coffee blending. While the machines are designed by Philips, the proprietary coffee pads are managed by the coffee division. Over the years, ownership of the coffee side of the business transitioned as Douwe Egberts moved through various corporate structures, eventually becoming part of JDE Peet's.
Today, Senseo remains a dominant force in the European coffee landscape. The machines and coffee pads are manufactured across a global supply chain, with significant production facilities located in Poland and Belgium to serve the European market. The brand continues to focus on convenience and variety, offering a wide range of coffee blends and specialty flavors.
