BioWare is a legendary high-end video game developer originally founded in 1995 by medical doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Known for its sophisticated storytelling and complex character development, the brand quickly established itself as a leader in the Role-Playing Game (RPG) genre with iconic titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age.
The brand underwent a major ownership shift in 2007 when it was acquired by the American video game giant Electronic Arts (EA). This acquisition integrated BioWare into a global network of studios, though it has maintained its distinct identity as a premier developer within the EA ecosystem. Today, BioWare continues to operate primarily out of its flagship studio in Edmonton, as well as an additional location in Austin, Texas.
As a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, BioWare benefits from massive international distribution and marketing resources. While the intellectual property development is spearheaded in Canada, the physical manufacturing of game discs and global distribution are handled through EA's worldwide infrastructure, primarily headquartered in the United States.
