Vegemite yeast spread

Vegemite is an iconic Australian savory food spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. It was developed by Cyril Callister in Melbourne in 1922 to provide a local alternative to British Marmite. Since its inception, the product has been manufactured at the Port Melbourne factory in Victoria, Australia.

For many years, the brand was under American ownership after being acquired by Kraft Foods. However, in 2017, ownership returned to Australian hands when Bega Cheese Limited purchased the brand along with most of Mondelez International's Australia and New Zealand grocery and cheese business. Today, Vegemite remains a staple of Australian culture and is managed by Bega Heritage Foods, a subsidiary of the Bega Group.
