Buscopan tablets

Buscopan is a well-known pharmaceutical product used to treat abdominal pain and cramps. It was originally developed by the German pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim, with its active ingredient, hyoscine butylbromide, being derived from a species of the Duboisia plant. For decades, it was a flagship brand of the German company.

In early 2017, as part of a major asset swap, Boehringer Ingelheim's consumer healthcare business, which included Buscopan, was acquired by Sanofi, a French multinational pharmaceutical company. Today, while the brand has German scientific roots, it is owned and managed by Sanofi's Consumer Healthcare division (now operating as Opella). Manufacturing for the European market typically occurs in specialized sites in France and Italy to ensure international quality and safety standards.
