Originally created by pharmacist William Owen as 'Glucozade' to provide a quick source of energy for the sick, it was later rebranded and marketed as a mainstream health and sports performance beverage. For decades, it was a staple of the British pharmaceutical and soft drink industry under the Beecham and later GlaxoSmithKline portfolios.

In 2013, the Lucozade brand, along with its sister brand Ribena, underwent a significant ownership shift when it was acquired from GlaxoSmithKline. Today, the brand is widely manufactured in the United Kingdom, specifically at the factory in Coleford, Gloucestershire, which remains a primary production hub for the European market. As an iconic part of British beverage history, it has successfully transitioned from a medicinal aid to one of the leading isotonic sports drinks globally.

The brand is currently owned by the Japanese multinational Suntory, which operates the brand through its European beverage division. This ownership has seen the brand innovate in the areas of low-sugar formulations and sustainable packaging, aligning it with modern health trends and global environmental standards.
