Sol Cerveza

Sol is a historic Mexican lager with a heritage dating back to 1899. It was originally created by a German master brewer in a small brewery called 'El Salto del Agua' near Mexico City. According to brand legend, the name 'Sol' (meaning 'Sun' in Spanish) was inspired by a ray of sunlight that illuminated the first experimental batch of beer through a crack in the brewery's roof. For much of its history, it was produced by Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, a leading Mexican brewery that became a powerhouse in the national market.

In 2010, the Dutch brewing giant Heineken N.V. acquired the beer operations of FEMSA, which included Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, bringing Sol into Heineken's global portfolio. Today, while Sol maintains deep Mexican roots and continues to be primarily brewed in Mexico (notably in Monterrey and Orizaba) for export, it is also manufactured in other international facilities. For instance, it is brewed at Heineken’s Zoeterwoude brewery in the Netherlands, which famously utilizes 100% solar energy for the process, aligning with the brand's sunny identity.

Ownership of the brand is held globally by Heineken N.V., headquartered in the Netherlands. In specific markets like the United States, distribution and marketing are managed through strategic partnerships. Since 2017, Molson Coors has held a long-term licensing agreement to market and distribute Sol in the U.S., though the brand itself remains an asset of Heineken.
