Marabou Schweizernöt milk chocolate

Marabou is one of Sweden's most iconic chocolate brands, originally launched in 1916. The specific variant shown, Schweizernöt, is a classic milk chocolate bar containing chopped hazelnuts. The brand was established by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, who already owned the Freia brand in Norway. Because the name Freia was already taken in Sweden, he named the Swedish company Marabou after the marabou stork found on the Freia logo.

While Marabou remains a staple of Scandinavian candy culture with its primary production facility in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, its ownership has transitioned over the decades from a family-run business to being part of a global conglomerate. In 1993, the company was acquired by Kraft General Foods (now Mondelēz International). Today, the brand is part of the Mondelēz portfolio, which manages its distribution across Northern Europe and beyond.
