OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. It was originally created by Steve Coast in the United Kingdom in 2004, inspired by the success of Wikipedia. The project is supported by the OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF), a non-profit organization that manages the infrastructure and licensing but does not own the data, which is contributed by a global community of volunteers.

Because the product is a digital database, it is 'manufactured' or contributed to from virtually every country on Earth. The data is hosted on servers located primarily in Europe and North America. The brand represents the pinnacle of community-driven open-source geographic information, operating under the Open Database License (ODbL).
