The brand is named after the first German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, whose family was granted the rights to the mineral spring in Aumühle near Hamburg in the late 19th century. The water is sourced from the deep, protected layers of the Sachsenwald forest, ensuring a pure and high-quality mineral composition.

Traditionally, the brand was part of the Nestle portfolio, but ownership shifted as the market for local German beverage brands consolidated. Today, the brand is owned and managed by Hansa-Heemann AG, a prominent German beverage manufacturer based in Aumühle. In 2021, Hansa-Heemann was acquired by the Dutch Refresco Group, making it the ultimate owner, though operations remain deeply rooted in Northern Germany.
