The brand was founded in the United States in 1950 by Howard Head, an aeronautical engineer who revolutionized the ski industry by introducing the first metal laminate skis. Today, the brand's headquarters are located in Kennelbach, Austria, and Amsterdam, Netherlands. Most high-performance skis are manufactured in its main production facility in Kennelbach, Vorarlberg, Austria, while other production operations for skis and equipment take place in the Czech Republic. The brand is globally recognized for its association with elite athletes and high-performance racing gear.

HEAD is currently owned by Head Sport GmbH, which is controlled by the Eliasch family. Johan Eliasch, a Swedish-British businessman, acquired the company in the 1990s and transformed it into a multi-brand sports group including Penn, Tyrolia, and Mares. The group remains a dominant force in winter sports, tennis, and diving equipment.
