Founded in 1898 as Westdeutsche Benzol-Verkaufs-Vereinigung, the brand name Aral was derived from the chemical compounds Aromatics and Aliphatics, signifying the high-quality synthetic benzene-mixture fuels it pioneered in the early 20th century.

Today, Aral is Germany's largest petrol station network. While its brand heritage is deeply rooted in German engineering and quality, the brand's ownership transitioned to the multinational energy sector. Since the early 2000s, it has been a core part of the BP group, leveraging global refinery networks and research facilities to maintain its market leadership.
