Stabilo is a world-renowned brand of writing instruments, most famous for its vibrant highlighters and fineliner pens. The brand's journey began in 1855 in Nuremberg, Germany, as a small pencil factory named Grossberger & Kurz. In 1865, it was acquired by the Schwanhäußer family, who introduced the iconic swan logo and eventually launched the Stabilo brand in 1925 to represent their high-quality, durable lead pencils. Today, Stabilo remains an independent, family-owned enterprise, managed by the fifth and sixth generations of the founding family.
Manufacturing for Stabilo products is conducted across three primary global locations to serve over 180 countries. Their highlighters, including the legendary Stabilo BOSS, are produced in Weißenburg, Germany. Wood-based pencils are manufactured in Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, while ballpoint pens and other plastic-based writing tools are produced in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. This diversified production network allows the brand to maintain high quality while catering to a global market.
Ownership of the brand resides with the Schwan-STABILO Group, under the parent company Schwanhäußer Industrie Holding GmbH & Co. KG. Based in Heroldsberg near Nuremberg, the group has expanded beyond stationery into the cosmetics and outdoor sectors (owning brands like Deuter and Ortovox). As of 2026, the company continues to operate as a private family business, emphasizing long-term stability and sustainable manufacturing practices.
