La Baleine is France's premier brand of sea salt, recognized globally by its iconic blue packaging and whale logo. The salt is harvested from the historic Aigues-Mortes saltworks in the Camargue region of southern France, a site where salt production dates back to the Roman era. The brand itself was established in 1934 to bring high-quality, 100% marine salt to households, using traditional methods involving the natural evaporation of seawater through the sun and wind.

The brand is owned by the Salins Group (Compagnie des Salins du Midi et des Salines de l'Est), one of Europe's largest salt producers. Since 2014, the Salins Group has been under the ultimate ownership of Finachef, a holding company controlled by the Hubert François family. This ownership ensures that the brand remains a French-owned entity, maintaining its heritage and sustainable harvesting practices in the Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.
