Tchibo is a prominent German coffee brand founded in 1949 by Max Herz and Carl Tchiling-Hiryan in Hamburg. The name itself is a portmanteau of 'Tchiling' and 'Bohne' (the German word for bean). Originally starting as a mail-order coffee company, it revolutionized the market by delivering freshly roasted coffee directly to consumers' homes.

Today, Tchibo is one of Germany's largest retail and coffee shop chains, famous for its unique business model of 'A new world every week,' where it sells a rotating assortment of non-food products alongside its signature coffee. The coffee beans are sourced globally from regions like South America and Africa and are primarily roasted in the company's own facilities in Germany, including major sites in Hamburg and Berlin.

The brand is owned by Maxingvest AG, a holding company controlled by the Herz family. Maxingvest also holds a significant stake in Beiersdorf AG, the maker of Nivea. Tchibo remains a private, family-owned enterprise that continues to lead the coffee market in Central and Eastern Europe.
