The company was founded on November 9, 1989, by Rudi Sprügel in the town of Stachenhausen, Germany. The name 'JAKO' is a portmanteau derived from the names of the two rivers that flow through the Hohenlohe region where the company was established: the Jagst and the Kocher.

It remains a family-owned business, currently managed by the second generation of the Sprügel family.
