Erdnussflips (Peanut Puffs)

Erdnussflips, also known as peanut puffs, are a quintessential German snack made from extruded corn grits flavored with ground peanuts and salt. They were first introduced to the German market in 1963 by the company Bahlsen (now Lorenz) under the brand name 'ErdnußLocken'. Today, they are a staple in Central European snack culture, produced by various brands ranging from market leaders like Lorenz and funny-frisch to numerous private labels sold by retailers like Aldi and Lidl.

The snack is created using an extrusion process where corn meal is pressurized and heated until it expands into its airy, lightweight shape. After cooling, the puffs are coated in a mixture of fat (such as sunflower oil), ground peanuts, and salt. While Erdnussflips are synonymous with German snack aisles, the market is dominated by two major corporate groups: Lorenz Snack-World and the Intersnack Group (owner of the funny-frisch brand). Production remains heavily concentrated in German manufacturing facilities to ensure freshness and meet the high regional demand.
