Moleskine is an iconic Italian brand synonymous with the culture of creativity, travel, and personal expression. Originally established in 1997 by the Milanese publisher Modo & Modo, the brand was inspired by the legendary black notebooks used by luminaries like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Ernest Hemingway. The modern brand successfully transformed a simple utilitarian object into a luxury accessory for the global creative class.
While the design and conceptualization of Moleskine products remain centered in Milan, Italy, the manufacturing is primarily outsourced to the Far East, specifically China and Vietnam. This strategic production model allows the company to combine large-scale output with the artisanal detailing the brand is known for. Since late 2016, Moleskine has been owned by the Belgian investment group D’Ieteren, which continues to manage the brand as a key subsidiary while maintaining its strong Italian identity and global headquarters in Milan.
