Birkenstock is a historic German footwear brand that traces its lineage back to 1774, when Johann Adam Birkenstock was recorded as a cobbler in church records. The brand is globally recognized for its anatomical 'footbed' design, which was pioneered by Konrad Birkenstock in the late 19th century and further refined throughout the 20th century. The Arizona model, featuring its signature two-strap design, became a cultural icon in the 1960s and 1970s and remains one of the company's most popular styles.
While the brand was family-owned for over six generations, it underwent a significant shift in 2021 when a majority stake was acquired by L Catterton, a private equity firm backed by the French luxury conglomerate LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) and the family holding company of Bernard Arnault. Following a successful initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange in late 2023, L Catterton remains the controlling shareholder. Despite these changes in ownership, Birkenstock maintains a strong commitment to its heritage, with the vast majority of its production, including the signature cork footbeds and sandals, still occurring in its own manufacturing facilities across Germany.
